We’re thrilled to welcome two exciting new residents to our Zoo: Manu the toco toucan and Izel the capybara!
There’s new energy in the South American Trail at Naples Zoo with the arrival of two new residents: Izel, a confident young capybara, and Manu, a striking toco toucan. These charismatic animals are already making a splash in their new home, adding vibrant life to this immersive habitat.
Both Izel and Manu arrived from San Diego Zoo as part of a breeding recommendation through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Species Survival Plan® (SSP), which helps ensure healthy, sustainable animal populations within accredited facilities. Izel was matched with Naples Zoo’s female capybaras for future breeding, but he’ll need to mature before they’re introduced. Manu was recommended as a potential mate for the Zoo’s resident toucan, Macy, and the pair are already settling in well.
Izel, a 1-year-9-month-old male, is already known for his bold personality and curious nature. He’ll share space with red-ruffed agoutis until he’s ready to meet the Zoo’s female capybaras.
Manu, a 6-year-old male, was shy at first but is quickly warming up, especially during mealtimes, and is already forming a bond with Macy.
