SanCap Cares to host Annual Island Celebration March 28
Every spring for two decades, the Sanibel and Captiva communities have rallied to support the life changing work at the Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida, the only one of its kind in the region. Last year marked the 20th anniversary of SanCap Cares — the organization responsible — and the pandemic derailed what was to be an amazing anniversary celebration.
This year, SanCap Cares will once again rise to the challenge with a live virtual event. At the 21st annual Island Celebration on March 28, it will celebrate both its 20th anniversary and moving forward into its 21st year of making a difference in the lives of children throughout Southwest Florida.
SanCap Cares Committee members have chosen “Resilience” as the theme, demonstrating the spirit of the islands as well as Lee Health as they continue navigating through the challenges of the past year.
Beginning at 5 p.m., the gala will feature food from six local establishments, along with a signature cocktail, champagne toast and a few surprises. MudBugs, Sweet Melissa’s, Blue Giraffe, 400 Rabbits, Paper Fig and The Sanctuary Golf Club are each preparing an item for a tapas platter that participants will enjoy at home while watching online. The signature drink for this year is called the French Kiss.
The live program will include entertainment with The Modern Gentlemen, appearances by hospital staff, the silent Give to Give online auction, and a hospital tour by 11-year-old Heidi, a former patient. Congress Jewelers will provide a custom designed, anniversary ring of emeralds and diamonds for a special auction. There will be memories from past events, as well a showcase of friends and donors.
“Every year, the SanCap community has stepped up and reaffirmed that it is important for us to support healthcare. I think, through this pandemic, we all see why that is so critical,” committee Member Valerie Tutor said. “This is a great way to continue that tradition of generosity for our health care workers, particularly those who serve our children.”
This year’s area of focus for the hospital is a new pediatric transport ambulance. The specialized vehicle is designed to handle both mother and baby in emergencies and is used several times a day to bring young patients to the critical care provided by doctors and nurses at the children’s hospital.
SanCap Cares donors sponsored the current ambulance in 2013. Since that time, it has traveled well over 232,000 miles, been struck by lightning while transporting a patient in 2017 and made over 5,000 trips. SanCap Cares hopes to raise the $550,000 needed to fill the critical need, as well as to contribute through the Give to Give for needed hospital equipment and other initiatives.
Tickets are $500 a couple, and patron sponsorships start at $1,500 with special gifts and acknowledgements. Participants can choose to pick up their menu items, cocktails and goodies, which come in a special insulated bag, at either The Community House or Sanctuary Golf Club.
