A situation in which a teen allegedly barricaded himself inside a Cape Coral home and took a 15-year-old female acquaintance as a possible hostage was resolved without incident Tuesday afternoon.

Cape Coral Police responded to a report of a barricaded gunman/hostage situation at 4131 S.W. Santa Barbara Place at 1:10 p.m.

Gregory M. Griffin, 16, was believed to have skipped school and was possibly at home. Griffin’s father was at work and had asked a family friend to go to the house and verify that Gregory was there, Cape Coral police said in a statement released Tuesday afternoon.

Upon arrival at the residence, the family friend was confronted by Gregory who threatened him with a baseball bat, police said, adding that Gregory then retreated into the house and armed himself with a handgun.

The teen then barricaded himself inside of the residence and possibly took the 15-year-old female acquaintance as hostage.

The family friend called Cape Coral police for help.

Officers arrived and quickly established a perimeter around the home and shut down the surrounding streets, officials said. Due to the seriousness of the situation, the SWAT Team was called in and members took over the perimeter as hostage negotiators attempted to establish contact to resolve the situation peacefully.

At approximately 3 p.m., the SWAT Team made entry in to the home and quickly rescued the 15-year-old girl. Griffin was also quickly and safely taken into custody without incident, officials said.

The girl was taken to Health Park Hospital to be checked out as a precaution but is believed to be unharmed.

Griffin was transported to Cape Coral Police Headquarters to meet with detectives. Charges are pending but not yet available, police said.

“This was an extremely dangerous situation that had the potential for a tragic ending,” said Lt Tony Sizemore, police spokesman in the prepared statement. “We all see every day on the news just how deadly gun violence can be and Cape Coral is certainly not immune to these dangers.

“Fortunately this city is protected by a top-flight police department staffed with patrol officers who receive the finest training for such instances. We also have a world-class SWAT Team who is prepared for these dynamic situationsit definitely showed today.”
