A man’s medical condition has improved after he showed up at the Cape Coral Hospital with a gunshot wound to the chest on New Year’s Day.

Evan Miles Vernadakis, 18, of 4292 Ellen Ave., Fort Myers, was listed in fair condition Tuesday at Lee Memorial Hospital, where he was transferred.

At about 8:43 p.m. Jan. 1, Cape officers responded to the Cape hospital at 636 Del Prado Blvd. in reference to a report of a man with a gunshot wound. Upon their arrival, police identified Vernadakis as the victim of the gunshot.

According to a report, he had an apparent gunshot wound to the left chest area. Vernadakis told police that the last thing he remembered was taking a shower and getting ready to go out for the night to celebrate the new year.

Vernadakis reportedly was unable to state when or where he was shot.

He also could not or would not provide any further information.

Police retrieved his clothing and turned it over to forensics, along with photographs taken of Vernadakis’ injuries, according to the report.

He was later transported to Lee Memorial Hospital in serious condition.
