Three companies took home the top prize in their category Friday during the Cape Coral Construction Industry Association’s 2012 Awards of Excellence.

Each year, the CCCIA accepts nominations from its membership for the Builder of the Year, Subcontractor/Supplier of the Year and Affiliate of the Year. There were three nominees in each of the categories for this year.

For Builder of the Year, Castle Harbour Homes won out over Community Homes and Southern Premier Homes. Owner and founder Dennis Miehle said winning the CCCIA award felt great because of how new the company is.

“Because I opened the doors 3 1/2 years ago, I thought it was an achievement,” he said, adding that he and his team made it possible.

“It happened pretty fast,” Miehle said.

Asked why he thought Castle Harbour Homes was selected to win, he cited his company and team’s involvement in the CCCIA and in the community.

“I think that that award is probably an overall achievement of the company,” Miehle said, adding that it is not about one single project. “Our involvement in different organizations and things we’ve done in the community.”

While this is Castle Harbour Homes’ first CCCIA award, the company won the Superior Home Award in the 2012 Parade of Homes from the Lee Building Industry Association. It also was honored by the Greater Miami Core Service.

“We just got some recognition from an entity in Miami-Dade, where we were helping to train youths in the masonry trades,” he said.

He called the company’s involvement with the CCCIA “rewarding.”

For Subcontractor/Supplier of the Year, Honc Marine Contracting took the title over Mike Patrick Electric and Tibbetts Lumber Company. President David Mulicka explained that the company has been nominated four times.

“But our first time that we received this particular award,” he said. “We’re honored and humbled that our peers would nominate us for such an honor.”

Mulicka thanked his customers and team members.

“It’s obviously very exciting because we have such a great team,” he said, adding that it is “something to smile about” after a long hard year.

“It was just a great way to end 2012, and we’re looking for more positive growth in 2013,” Mulicka said.

It is the first industry award Honc Marine Contracting has earned.

“But the most important award we can win is repeat and referral business from our customers,” he said.

Affiliate of the Year went to Spiro & Associates, Marketing, Advertising and Public Relations over Premier Insurance Corporation and Wallace International Trucks. Owner Christopher Spiro could not be reached for comment Tuesday.

CCCIA Executive Director Heather Mazurkiewicz explained that it is the first year that Spiro & Associates was nominated for an Award of Excellence.

“Which that, in of itself, speaks volumes to what the judges think they contributed to the industry as a whole,” she said.

Mazurkiewicz called the company a long-time CCCIA member.

“Over the course of the last couple of years, they have contributed greatly to the efforts with regard to our marketing and pubic relations,” she said.

Spiro & Associates designed the cover for the Builders Showcase that the CCCIA brought back, as well as updated the Cape organization’s logo.

“He’s just been a tremendous asset to the organization,” Mazurkiewicz said of Spiro.
