6-10 a.m. fund raiser: Early shoppers can help give charities a boost
Tickets are still available at the door today for Belk’s Charity Sale.
This is the fifth year that the store has held the fund-raiser, which takes place in the spring and in the fall. Cathy Norwood, the Cape store manager, explained that Belk partners with local charities to help them raise funds.
“We give them tickets and flyers, and they sell the tickets to come to the sale,” she said. “You have to have a ticket to get into the sale.”
Tickets are $5 a piece, and the charities get to pocket their sales.
“They keep the money they raised,” Norwood said.
The fund-raiser runs from 6 to 10 a.m. today, Nov. 3. Tickets are available for sale at the door for $5, with the proceeds split among the charities.
About 23 local charities have signed up to participate in the event.
“Some of them are small and only sold 20 tickets,” she said.
Larger groups, like the Ronald McDonald House and Habitat for Humanity, sell hundreds of tickets. Norwood estimated Friday that about 2,600 were sold.
“It’s all about values and working in the community,” she said. “It’s all about getting involved in your community, and how do you do that? Giving back.”
When doors open at 6 a.m., the first 100 people will get a free gift card worth $5 to up to $1,000. The entry ticket also serves as a $5 off coupon.
“It’s really one of the biggest sales we have, other than Black Friday,” Norwood said.
Discounts range from 20 percent to 70 percent, except on cosmetics. However, the $5 entry ticket coupon can be used toward cosmetics.
“Coupons never work on cosmetics, so it does work that day,” she said, adding that the discounts are “a considerable difference” to typical ones.
Shoppers will receive a two-page flyer that outlines the sale layout.
“So that makes it kind of easy for them to navigate through the sales,” Norwood said.
For those who can’t attend the early morning charity event, normal sale prices, of 25 to 50 percent off, will be good throughout the weekend.
Charitable donations also still will be accepted after the special charity event hours as will donations for Toys For Tots.
