Injured driver improving
A Cape Coral driver’s hospital condition has been upgraded about a month after a semitrailer jumped a median and collided into oncoming traffic.
Edel Dumenigo, 45, was listed in fair Friday at Lee Memorial Hospital.
At about 5:45 p.m. Sept. 18, Warren Gordon, 36, of Lehigh Acres, was traveling southbound on County Road 951 in a 2002 semitrailer when he reportedly failed to maintain control of the trailer due to slow traffic.
According to a Florida Highway Patrol report, Gordon braked to avoid a collision, and the trailer crossed the median and entered the northbound lanes of CR 951. Three vehicles headed northbound hit the semitrailer.
A 2002 Chevy F350 traveling in the inside lane, driven by Dumenigo, and a 2011 Ford F350 traveling in the center lane, driven by Floyd Early Lilly, 48, of Naples, were unable to stop and collided headfirst into the trailer’s side.
A 1995 Lexus traveling in the outside lane, driven by John Michael Ranieri, 82, of Marco Island, was also unable to stop and struck the semitrailer cab.
Dumenigo was taken to the hospital in critical condition, along with a passenger. Joaquin Dumenigo, 68, of Fort Lauderdale, sustained serious injuries in the accident and was transported, according to the report.
Joaquin Dumenigo was treated and later released, officials said.
Lilly and Ranieri reportedly sustained minor injuries, but they were not transported to a hospital. Ranieri’s passenger, John D. Ranieri, 52, of Marco Island, also reported sustaining minor injuries but was not transported.
Gordon nor his passenger, Steve Walker, 31, of Fort Myers, were injured.
The FHP cited Gordon for careless driving, according to the report.
The accident was not alcohol related, the report states.
