Investigation into fatal accident in Collier County continues
Authorities are waiting on the toxicology results of a Cape Coral woman who was involved in a fatal traffic accident in Collier County over the weekend.
Tonya Acevedo, 30, was traveling south on state Route 29 in the northbound lane in a 2004 Cadillac Saturday, according to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol. It is unknown why she was in the wrong lane.
At about 9:30 p.m., the Cadillac collided head-on with a 1998 Pontiac that was traveling north on SR 29, near Interstate 75. The Cadillac rotated onto its left side and the Pontiac rotated onto the shoulder of the highway.
Acevedo sustained minor injuries and was transported to Naples Community Hospital. She had been discharged as of Tuesday, hospital staff reported.
The driver of the Pontiac, Leyvany Viciendo, 35, of Naples, sustained serious injuries and was taken to Lee Memorial Hospital. Viciendo died Sunday night.
A passenger in the Pontiac was not injured, the report states.
FHP is waiting on test results to determine if Acevedo was impaired.
“This case is pending toxicology results,” Lt. Greg Bueno reported, adding that no citations or charges will be filed until the results are received.
It can take up to 60 days for toxicology results to come in.
