Cape man dies in ATV crash
Officials have identified a man fatally injured in an ATV accident Saturday as Jon Wesley Anderson, 21, of Cape Coral.
He died at the scene after he reportedly lost control of the Yamaha 660 Ranger Utility Vehicle he was driving on a dirt roadway in the area of Burnt Store Road and Durden Parkway north of Cape Coral. He was ejected from the vehicle after it hit a stump and flipped. The ATV then came to rest on top of Anderson, causing head injuries, officials said.
His passenger, identified as Cassandra Susan Becker, 29, also of Cape Coral was not injured.
Officials described the area of the crash as heavily wooded.
Due to the nature of the injuries, Lee County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Investigators responded.
Their investigation revealed that Anderson had entered a left curve at a high rate of speed, lost control of the vehicle and it tipped over to the right, officials said in a prepared statement. As he attempted to correct the motion, he over-corrected to the left causing the vehicle to flip. As the vehicle was losing control it a struck a stump, breaking the front suspension, which caused it to flip on its side. Anderson, who was not wearing a seatbelt or helmet, was ejected. The vehicle then came to final rest on top of him.
