A Cape Coral man has received two years in federal prison after recently pleading guilty to preparing fraudulent tax returns for several clients.

On Monday, U.S. District Court Judge John E. Steele sentenced Alfred Ferreras, 27, to 24 months in prison for preparing false and fraudulent income tax returns in the Middle District of Florida, officials reported.

Ferreras will also serve one year of supervised release when he gets out of prison, and he was ordered to pay approximately $711,207 in restitution.

He could not be reached Wednesday for comment on the sentence.

Ferreras pled guilty in May as part of a deal with federal prosecutors. According to the plea agreement, he prepared false tax returns for about 192 clients. Some returns contained false net losses from businesses.

Ferreras also included fraudulent First Time Home Buyer credits for his clients, documents state. The false filings result in undue refunds. The undue refunds ranged from about $795 in one case to $15,282 in another case.

He created about $120,086 in fraudulent refunds from 2008-09.

Ferreras was originally arrested and charged with 20 counts of preparing false and fraudulent income tax returns in January. If convicted, he faced a maximum penalty of three years in federal prison for each of the counts.

The case was investigated by the Internal Revenue Service.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Tama Koss Caldarone prosecuted the case.
