A Cape Coral man, who police say was intoxicated, is accused of firing two rounds from a handgun inside of his home early Wednesday morning before being arrested.

William Edward Riley, 66, of 5412 S.W. 16 Place, was charged with weapon offense missile into dwelling vehicle building or aircraft and weapon offense use firearm under influence of alcohol and booked into the Lee County Jail.

As of Thursday, he had been released from custody on $5,500 bond.

Riley was unavailable for comment on the allegations against him, and a woman who answered his telephone declined to talk about the charges.

At about 12:22 a.m. Wednesday, Cape police responded to a shooting at 5412 S.W. 16th Place. Upon arriving, two witnesses stated that Riley was intoxicated and had fired two rounds from a handgun inside of his home.

One man told police that he received a call from his father asking for his assistance in getting Riley into his home. When the man arrived, Riley was passed out in the middle of a nearby field, according to an arrest report.

The two helped Riley inside the residence. Once inside, Riley reportedly headed for the master bedroom, where he fell off of the side of the bed, waking his wife. Riley then reportedly grabbed a gun and yelled get out.

As the two exited the home, they heard the shots and called police.

According to the report, officers entered the home and discovered Riley on the floor in the master bedroom. There was a strong odor of gun powder in the bedroom and two shell casings were located near him.

Two bullet holes were observed between the bedroom door and closet.

A Glock handgun was recovered from the scene, police reported.

When officers read Riley his rights and asked if he understood them, he reportedly told police no and stated that he was a retired Boston cop.

Riley was taken to the hospital to be medically cleared. He declined to take a breath test, but a medical blood draw done by hospital staffers showed that Riley had a blood alcohol content of .317, the report states.

He was taken into custody and transported to the county jail.

Riley has a court appearance scheduled for Sept. 10.
