Groovy Music Festival to benefit the Harry Chapin Food Bank

By Staff

Everyone is invited to “get groovy” this Saturday, Aug. 11, at the Groovy Music Festival at The Morgan House in downtown Fort Myers. The event will benefit Harry Chapin Food Bank, and will feature live music provided by the bands Stolen Fruit, M 80’s and Indecision.

The festival will be held from 7 p.m. to midnight, with free admission with a $5 donation of nonperishable canned goods, which will be donated to the Harry Chapin. Also, a portion of the night’s proceeds will also be given to the food bank.

“We really appreciate The Morgan House putting this event together, stepping up and being a partner against hunger,” said Harry Chapin Food Bank Associate Director Joyce Jacobs. “The Groovy Music Festival is a fun way to attract patrons or participants, enjoy the music, socialize with friends and make new friends for a good cause.”

Have fun, bring some non-perishable food and help others in the community, she added.

The Morgan House in the Patio De Leon is a beautiful spot, she said.

“I think they would love groovy dress, that would make it more fun,” she said. “Get out the tye-dye and the beads and the bell bottoms and the wigs.”

The Harry Chapin Food Bank solicits, collects and stores quality food for distribution to families in need through a network of nonprofit agencies in Lee, Collier, Hendry, Charlotte and Glades counties, and provides food to more than 30,000 people monthly.

“Last year our distribution was 13.7 millions pounds of food, so it’s a very important cause,” she said. “What the funding does is for every dollar that is donated we are able to put $6 back out to the community.”

Generally they also get donations from farms, but it is not growing season for many staples now.

“And we’re just coming out of summer so it is extremely important we get extra food in,” Jacobs said.

The next scheduled big benefit will not be until Sept. 16, the Lee Trans Public Food Drive.

“Lee Trans will have buses at all the Publix stores in Lee County for us,” she said.
