Woman charged with fraudulently collecting food stamps

By Staff

A Cape Coral woman collected more than $1,700 in food stamps last year by fraudulently reporting that she was not employed, according to authorities.

Crystal Lynn Ortiz-Graham, 27, of 4642 Santa Barbara Blvd., was arrested and charged July 27 with fraud false statement for public aid $200 or more. As of Thursday, she had been released from the Lee County Jail on no bond.

Ortiz-Graham did not return a message seeking comment on the charge.

According to Florida’s Department of Financial Services, she submitted an application for public assistance eligibility to the Department of Children and Families in February 2011. Two months later, she was reportedly hired by McDonald’s.

Ortiz-Graham failed to report the employment once it began.

In August 2011 and then in January, she allegedly continued to report that she was not employed. She indicated that her information was correct to the best of her knowledge, and acknowledged that she must report any change.

According to a report, Ortiz-Graham failed to report her employment and submitted two false applications relative to her earned income. As a result, she illegally received $1,752 in food stamps from July 2011 to December.

She has a court appearance scheduled for Aug. 27.
