The youngsters who attended the Matlacha Community Center summer camp were treated to human foosball, a bounce house slide and laser tag Friday afternoon during a summer blowout party.

Community Center Site Director Sue Slingerland said she had 45 kids signed up each week during the eight weeks of summer camp, which was the same number of kids that they had last year.

“It was really good,” she said about the summer camp this year. “It seemed like it went by fast.”

The kids were treated to a presentation on how to make ice cream, as well as sampling some of the cool treats at Great Licks Ice Cream, a field trip to Zoomers Family Amusement Park, a matinee performance of “Grease” at Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre, bowling at Coral Lanes and pizza at Cici’s Pizza, as well as many activities at the park.

“We had lots of fun, thanks to those who donated,” Slingerland said. “It was a really good summer.”

She said they had Zoomers all to themselves and the kids seemed to have a great time.

“We will definitely go back to Zoomers again next year,” Slingerland said.

Courtney Lawrence, 8 and Marza Hiatt, 8, said their favorite part of summer camp was spending time together at Zoomers.

“We made lots of friends,” Courtney said during their visit.

Her favorite ride at Zoomers was the ship because it rocked back and forth.

Marza said the bumper boats were another favorite attraction of hers at the amusement park.

Emmaly Brown, 8, a first-time camper, said her favorite part of summer camp was going bowling at Coral Lanes.

“It was fun going bowling at summer camp,” she said.

Emmaly said she loved the camp counselors and she knows she will be back again next year.

Slingerland said although many kids did not want to leave when their parents came to pick them up, they went home tired after being at camp for the day.

Jilian Lutsky, 11, a first-time camper at the Matlacha Community Center, said camp is awesome because you get to meet new friends. Some of her favorite activities included foosball, the arcade game and foursquare, as well as the activities at the blowout party.

“I’ve been to laser tag, it is pitch black in there,” Jilian said. “It’s awesome.”

When asked if she will attend the camp again next year, she said, “I might because this place is awesome.”

Before the kids went outdoors to enjoy one of the many activities that Extreme Family put up Friday afternoon, they made thank you cards for the Ladies of the Elks.

The youngsters also enjoyed pizza from Pizza Bella and a cake from Publix during the blowout party.

Now that summer is over, enrollment for the after-school program for 2nd through 5th graders is under way. Slingerland said there will be information at the Pine Island Elementary School Open House on Aug. 6. The program is offered until 6 p.m.
