A Cape Coral man accused of robbing two businesses last week over the course of two days remained in custody Tuesday at the county jail.

Darin Alexander Carignan, 41, of 215 S.E. 16th St., was arrested and charged Friday with one count each of robbery with a weapon and robbery with a firearm. He remained at the Lee County Jail on $100,000 bond.

At about 1 p.m. Thursday, a man entered L&J Nail Salon, at 2221 Santa Barbara Blvd., and approached the counter. The man reportedly displayed a knife to an employee, then ordered the employee to give him the money.

The employee told police that the man jabbed at him with the knife and threatened to cut him if he did not hurry up. The employee said he opened the register in fear and the man grabbed the cash and demanded more.

The employee stated that there was no more, pulled out his wallet and showed the man that he had no money. The man came around the counter and began searching drawers, at which point the employee ran outside.

He asked a passing motorist to call 911 and saw the man flee north on Southeast Santa Barbara Place on a bicycle. Before the man entered the salon, a witness out front reportedly observed him put on gloves first.

The employee and witness provided the man’s description to police.

At about 9:20 a.m. Friday, a man entered the Capital Bank, at 2209 Santa Barbara Blvd., and approached an employee. The man reportedly handed her a note that instructed her to give him money. It also noted that he had a gun.

The man grabbed the money and fled out the front door. Two employees watched the man head north on Southeast Santa Barbara Place on a bicycle.

Responding officers observed a man in the 1600 block of Southeast Santa Barbara matching the description given by the employees. An officer tried to make contact with the man, who fled when he saw the approaching officer.

The man left his bicycle in a vacant lot in the 100 block of Southeast 16th Street and continued east behind the residences, according to officials. An officer lost sight of the man in the 200 block of Southeast 16th Street.

Police canvassed the area and learned of the man’s possible residence.

At about 11:01 a.m., Carignan exited his home and was detained.

The bank employees were transported to the scene, where they positively identified Carignan as the man who had robbed the bank, officials reported.

Carignan was taken into custody and taken to CCPD headquarters.

Police then conducted a photo lineup with the salon robbery victim and a witness, who both reportedly identified Carignan as the salon robber.

He was additionally charged in connection to the second incident.

Carignan has a court appearance scheduled for Aug. 13.
