A Cape Coral 17-year-old has written a play that will be produced, and which he will direct, at Cultural Park Theatre in August.

Mason Breitzig, took creative writing classes at Edison College where he has been a dual enrolled, and has acted in numerous productions at the theater.

His play is entitled “Just Another Day.”

“It is a comedy mystery set in a law office and takes place in New York in the 1950s,” he said. “It surrounds two guys, one the business owner of the law office and another who works for the law office, a lawyer. The business owner has his place of business destroyed and blames the lawyer because he’s resigning.”

The primary conflict for them is placing blame.

It’s an ambitious effort. There are 12 main roles and three extras, totaling 15 cast members.

Breitzig said he’s been happy with the reception of his work both by officials at the theater and his new cast.

“I first handed it to a couple of people there, and they read over. The first draft was a little iffy, then I submitted a new draft that was totally different and they said immediately, ‘Let’s put it on stage,'” he said.

Then his perspective players read the work to rave reviews.

“It’s unbelievable that he was able to write something like this,” said his father Scott Breitzig. “The first read through was so supportive, after they (cast) read it they all jumped at him for parts.

“He’s always been creative. He was born in Lubbock Texas, and when he was a child, everyone would watch him, he was interesting to watch,” his father continued. “He’s always been talented, in everything from piano to voice and now to writing.”

Comedy is a key to the production, Mason said.

A brief synopsis he penned:

“A 1950’s New York law firm goes from calm to absolutely out of control, in just one day. The play circles around two very different men: James an aspiring writer, and Mr. Walter Murphy an accomplished business owner. The average day at the office quickly turns into a nightmare when Walter has his business destroyed. Without knowing who committed the crime, he jumps to conclusions and plays some childish revenge pranks on James. Things get messy, bizarre, and even romantic. It’s a load of fun with plenty mystery and comedic twists that will keep you on the edge of your seat until you fall right out of it with laughter.”

Despite his talent for writing, he said his career aspirations are in the medical field.

“Just Another Day” will be on stage Aug. 17, 18 and 19. On Friday, Aug 17, showtime is 8 p.m. On Saturday, Aug. 18, there will be two shows, one at 3 p.m. and another at 8 p.m. The Sunday Aug. 18 matinee is at 3 p.m.

The cost is $17 for adults and $12 for students.
