The Harney Point Kiwanis Club of Cape Coral has presented its annual Club Scholarship Award to Jennifer Mann of Cape Coral.

“Jennifer is the valedictorian of the Class of 2012 at Oasis High School,” said Kevin Colpoys, chairman of the Scholarship Committee. “She has maintained her academic standing during the past four years as the highest ranking senior in her grade with a GPA of 4.73.”

It’s not just academics that garnered her the scholarship, he said.

“Jennifer has participated in the following student activities as well during her high school career: Model United Nations, Key Club, Volleyball, Soccer, Latin Rhythms Club, Student Parliament, Swim Team and Junior Leadership,” Colpoys said.

“Jennifer is the daughter of Aracelly Mann, and has worked during the past few years as well, to assist the family with finances. Jennifer has been accepted to Florida Gulf Coast University in the College of Health Professions, with a major in Pre-health Science,” he added.

Scott Turner is president of the club and awarded the scholarship along with Colpoys to Mann at a recent meeting.

“The scholarships are part of Kiwanis giving back to the children of the community and rewarding those who have worked hard throughout their high school years, both academically and in them giving back to the community,” Turner said.

Scholarships aren’t all the club does for local children.

“The biggest thing we do is in the fall, we hold a kids festival,” said Turner. “It is always the Saturday before Halloween, Oct. 27 this year, at Jaycee Park. The event will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Our main sponsor this year is Fox News.”

It’s a lot of community fun, he said.

There will be free pony rides, bounce houses and more. It’s purpose is also health and education for children, so there will be a lot of sponsors for children’s educational opportunities.

“There will be three halloween costumes that day, and we will give away a boys and girls bike also. When they come on, each child registers, and we will be giving away three savings bonds three savings bonds,” Turner said.

The Harney Point Kiwanis Club meets every Wednesday from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. with the meeting starting at noon, at The Dog Bar & Grill Restaurant, located at 3522 Del Prado Blvd. S.
