Fund raiser to help ill mom, son, celebrate Christmas early
The community can help a woman with cancer help fulfill some of her dreams by attending a special “Christmas in June” themed fund raiser on Monday, June 4, at BackStreets Sports Bar & Pizzeria.
It is formally called “Christmas Comes Early To the Cape.”
Susan Alderman has been fighting her battle with breast cancer since November, her friends and benefit organizers said, but the prognosis is poor. She is the single mom of 7-year old Roman, “who is her world,” said organizer Christine Sullivan.
The fund raiser will bring Christmas to the family early this year, with some special gifts for Roman, who wants to meet Santa at the North Pole with his mom.
He also wants to go to Disney World with her.
While a donation is coming through for a trip to Santaland in North Carolina with a hotel stay, funds still are needed for transportation to get them there.
The event will run from 6 p.m. until 1:30 a.m., and will feature 15 bands, local comedians, raffles and auctions.
“The cost is a suggested donation or a donation of a wrapped gift for a boy for Roman’s ‘Perpetual Christmas,’ for him to have gifts until he is 18. The gifts should be for him from age 7 to 18.”
The Christmas theme includes Santa making an appearance from 6 until 8 p.m. Heather Koenig will be taking photos with Santa for $5 each and printing them on site at the church next door.
“It’s Vineyards Community Church of Cape Coral. Children are welcome at the church; the event itself is 21 and over.”
There also is still a need for auction donations.
Local bands donating their time and talent include PUSH, Blue Eye Devil, Groove Alliance, MT40, Starz, Blackburn, George Lewis Project, Wallow Sound, Keith Clanton, Backlash, Renee Massey Hose with Moe, 10,000 Views, Underground, Myth and Clamdigger.
Two stages will run simultaneously.
“One is inside and one is out. There are now 15 bands,” Sullivan said.
Jet Sound is donating its time as are five local comedians, who will perform in between sets.
There also will be live auctions, raffles, and 50/50 fun.
Known as “Team Susan”, the group of supporters include friends Sullivan, Christine Thurston, Lawanda Mendoza and Dana Caldwell.
“That will also include a team of approximately 50 volunteers,” Sullivan said.
“I was familiar with her when I learned she was sick, and met her at an earlier benefit. We became quite close and she is in my heart.
“Financial donations may be sent as well. I have an Eventbrite.com event set up to take these.”
You can go to eventbrite.com/event/3636691442.
“You can also search that by the name of the event which is Christmas Comes Early To the Cape. They can do donations through Paypal or a check to Susan. Our event is also posted on Facebook.”
All proceeds from the event will be donated back to Susan and Roman.
