Former Cape resident named MangoMania Queen

By Staff

The new MangoMania Queen was announced during the Greater Pine Island Chamber of Commerce card exchange at Coastal Realty Thursday night.

Cassy Skau, who will replace Melissa Koferl as the new queen for 2012, moved to Pine Island with her husband, Paul, and three children in 2002. She was born in Hagerstown, Maryland, but lived in Strawberry Point, Iowa for quite a few years.

The new queen is a graduate of Cape Coral High School. She lived in Cape Coral and North Fort Myers for many years before making the move to Pine Island.

She met her husband, Paul, in a bowling alley in Cape Coral and tied the knot 20 years ago this year. The Skau’s children, Jordan, 17, Kyle, 14 and Morgan, 10 all attended Pine Island Elementary School.

Skau said her husband has family that lives on Pine Island, which is one of the reasons they decided to move there. She said they also both lived in a small community growing up and wanted the same for their children.

With an AA degree in paralegalism, she worked for the State Attorney’s Office before she saw a job opening with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.

Skau began working for the Lee County Sheriff’s Office in 1996. When a substation opened at Pineland Marina about four years ago she asked to be transferred to the island. She is now the clerk at the Pine Island substation.

She said her captain nominated her for MangoMania Queen because she does a lot of things on the island with the children and school. Skau said she also worked with the Cub Scouts for many years and has done demonstrations for the kids with some of her sheriff deputies.

“I am so excited,” she said about being chosen as the new queen. “I can’t wait to get going and just have a really good time and promote MangoMania and hopefully get more people involved and make it an even bigger event.”

Skau said she is just looking forward to having a good time and meeting people with her year-long journey of being the new queen.

She said she loves mangos and is treated to jams that one of her deputies makes from his mango tree.

“We put it on everything,” she said of the jam.

Pine Island residents and artists were asked to take part in the annual MangoMania artwork contest, which provided them with the opportunity to have their artwork made into the 2012 MangoMania T-shirt. The winners of the contest were also announced Thursday night at the Greater Pine Island Chamber event at the center.

The winner of the children’s division was Ashley McGraw. She was awarded $50 cash, two complimentary tickets to MangoMania and a T-shirt with her design.

The winner for the adult division was Kristine “Birdi” Smoch. She was awarded $300, two complimentary tickets to MangoMania and a T-shirt with her design. Her design will also appear on all print advertisement for MangoMania, which includes posters, flyers, print ads and web ads.

Smoch said she entered the contest because she thought it would be fun to win the T-shirt design.

“I love Matlacha and Pine Island and I am a big fan of mangos,” she said.

Smoch said she wanted her design to depict mangos and a festival, along with celebrating the beautiful tree.

Unfortunately, she will not be able to attend the festival this year, but will sign T-shirts when she returns in October.

MangoMania will be held on July 21 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on July 22 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It will be held at the German American Social Club at 2101 Pine Island Road in Cape Coral.
