Events to note Lee County’s 125th anniversary

By Staff

Lee County invites the community to join in its year-long 125th anniversary celebration. The county – named in honor of Civil War Gen. Robert E. Lee – was carved from Monroe County and incorporated on May 13, 1887. Visit “http://www.lee-county.com/125th”>www.lee-county.com/125th for a schedule of events throughout 2012 as well as a recommended reading list, historical photo gallery, trivia questions and more.

To commemorate the occasion, Lee County Commissioners authorized Parks & Recreation to offer free parking Sunday, May 13 – also Mother’s Day – to Lee County beaches, regional parks and boat ramps.

You can also join in on the fun by participating in the “Lovin’ Parks & Rec: 125 Year Quiz” and scavenger hunt. The 73-question quiz can be found online at www.leeparks.org and involves questions and trivia about baseball, beaches, boating, fishing, regional and neighborhood parks and even preserves. Those who submit a completed quiz and provide complete contact information will be entered into a drawing to win a year-long parking sticker to Lee County Parks & Recreation’s regional parks, boat ramps and other facilities. Other prizes also will be available.

Winners will be selected during July, which is National Recreation and Parks Month.

Park patrons are encouraged to take video when they visit parks and make submissions for the Lee County Parks & Recreation YouTube site. To participate click on the “SUBMIT A VIDEO” link on the website at www.leeparks.org. Any questions? Email LeeParks@leegov.com.

For more information on parking or the quiz, contact Lee County Park & Recreation at www.leeparks.org or (239) 533-7275.
