Cape Coral police, along with the K-9 unit, arrested and charged two men in a brazen daytime break-in and grand theft auto, according to officials.

At 8 a.m. Monday, a resident contacted police and reported that a Toyota pickup truck was backed into the driveway of a home at 3233 S.W. Fourth Terrace, which was supposed to be vacant. The caller said a man was walking around the home and was last seen at the rear of it. A second man was sleeping inside of the truck.

Officers arrived and discovered the truck into the driveway, backed up to the garage door. A check of the license plate revealed that the truck was stolen out of Fort Myers. Officers then made contact with the man inside of the truck, identified as Rubens Aspilaire, 18, of 4438 S.W. 26th St., Lehigh Acres.

Aspilaire was detained while police looked for the second man.

Officers surrounded the home and observed the second man, later identified as Jerry Adam, 28, of 2811 Central Ave., Apt. 405, Fort Myers, trying to exit through the rear slider. Adam saw officers and retreated back into the home. Adam was instructed to exit the home or the K-9 was going to be deployed, and he exited the home.

An search of the truck revealed a bag containing a 9 mm pistol with a 30-round magazine, a Tom-Tom GPS, a flashlight, a screwdriver, a pry bar and a tool bag, containing a hammer, wrench, razor knife and socket set.

Adam was charged with grand theft auto, burglary, possession of burglary tools and three failure to appear warrants.

Aspilaire was charged with possession of burglary tools, burglary, possession of marijuana, carrying a concealed firearm, grand theft and a failure to appear warrant.

Both was transported to the Lee County Jail and booked on no bond.

“This was outstanding work by the officers, detectives, forensics personnel, dispatchers and the neighbors who made the right decision to call their police department,” Lt. Tony Sizemore, spokesman for the Cape police, said. “Because of this partnership, two dangerous felons are off of our streets and out of our neighborhoods.”
