The city council is not going to give up in its request to Lee County that it put a traffic light at an intersection where a 13-year-old boy was killed two years ago.

The council voted unanimously to send another letter to the Board of County Commissioners requesting it put a traffic light on the corner of Del Prado and Northeast 3rd Terrace.

Also, despite mild opposition from some in the crowd, the city council unanimously passed ordinances to authorize applying for a loan to finance the water and wastewater projects for Southwest 6 & 7 through the state revolving fund loan.

Council voted 7-0 (Chris Chulakes-Leetz was excused from the second half of the meeting for a personal matter) to send the county commission another letter to convince the board to put a traffic light on an intersection where Ryan Michael Santos, 13, was struck and killed by a vehicle when he attempted to cross Del Prado on his bicycle in April 2010.

“We hand-delivered a letter to the BOCC on March 1 and they’ve kicked it around ever since,” said Councilmember Kevin McGrail. Race-Trac has come to us and offered to pay for it, as well as operate and maintain the light.”

McGrail warned the offer isn’t open-ended and that they need a decision soon because “they have other things to spend their money on.”

Before that, council voted to finally push forward the Southwest 6 & 7 Utilities Expansion Project by authorizing to apply for a loan to finance the project.

But the vote didn’t come without some questions from residents in public input, who seemed weary of what they believed was more pain for the ratepayer.

Once asked if the bonds that were used to pay for utilities expansion in 1991 had been paid, while another, who had earlier complained that a retention pond for reuse water hadn’t been completed, said he couldn’t support a loan when they couldn’t finish what they started previously.

Coucilmember Marty McClain said he didn’t have all the answers, which was why they were doing the revolving loan.

In other business, council voted to appoint Jeff Roman to the Planning & Zoning Commission; approve the bid by CSJ of SW FL, Inc. for the Horton Park Boat Ramp Repair Project; to reclassify one Fire Quartermaster position to a Fire Support Coordinator position.
