CCPD: Resident helps catch burglar

By Staff

At 7:45 p.m. Monday, Cape Coral police responded to a report of a burglary at 1406 S.W. Eighth Place.

The homeowner told police that he walked into his garage to have a cigarette and came face to face with a man in a hooded sweatshirt standing by his car. The man, later identified as Evon Dawkins, 17, of 2587 Sawgrass Lake Court, told the homeowner that he was going to ask for a glass of water.

When the man asked Dawkins why he did not come to the front door, Dawkins reportedly became confrontational, gestured to the waistband of his pants and told the man that he was armed with a pistol. Dawkins then ran from the home while the man called police.

Officers located Dawkins blocks away from the home and detained him.

The homeowner was brought to the scene and he reportedly identified Dawkins as the man in his garage.

Dawkins was arrested and charged with occupied burglary of a dwelling.

He was not in possession of a gun at the time.

Dawkins was transported to the Lee County Jail and booked.
