If you like Gershwin and classics like “Someone to Watch Over Me” and “I got Rhythm,” you’ll love the North Fort Myers High School Spring Musical “Crazy for You.”

“Crazy for You” won Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Choreography and Best Costume in 1992.

“The music is timeless,” said Director and NFM High drama instructor Michele Whitener. “You start humming it, tapping your feet to it. The students are really enjoying it, even though these songs were written in the 1920s.”

Two Cape Coral area students will play the leads. Trevor Schmidt will portray Bobby Child and Lisa Hammon plays Polly Baker.

It is the story of the Zangler Follies in New York with the action then moving to Deadrock, Nevada, in this spirited song and dance extravaganza.

“There will be 55 onstage performers, 27 in the orchestra and 25 students in the tech/crew,” said Whitener. “Whether you are 6 or 60, there is something for everyone in this musical comedy.”

Besides the music, there is intricate choreography in the play.

“The sets are phenomenal, and so much of the choreography depends on the sets,” said choreographer Robin Dawn. “This is my 18th show at North. I really love this show.”

Famed choreographer Susan Stroman did the original choreography. Dawn adapted it for the school.

“The students adapted to it very well,” she said. “Every single dance is a big production number, there is no small dance routine. It’s tap, jazz, a little lyrical and some ballroom dancing. Lots of numbers and lots of props.”

When she found out they were doing this musical, she even came in to teach tap once a week.

“The students were overly enthusiastic about taking on this huge musical.”

A lot of North Fort Myers High School students want to pursue musical theater as a career, which requires dance and sometimes tap and this musical is full of both, she said.

The musical director is Gwen Gregg.

“The music in this production is very very difficult but these students have risen to the occasion and have worked very hard. Gershwin is probably some of the hardest music to play. This particular score is hard because everything is fast.

“Concerning the orchestra, when we first started rehearsing I told them a real musician is able to follow along with the musical without a director like me coming in directing them, and they really have started to feel that. They slow down, speed up; they are starting to become one with the singers,” he said.

The dates for the show are Thursday, April 12, Friday, April 13, and Saturday, April 14, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, April 15, with a matinee at 2 p.m.

The cost is adults $8, students $5. Tickets are available at the door. Doors open at 6 p.m.
