The Cape Coral Police Department will host a free Safe Senior Workshop geared toward older residents and caregivers. The event will be held on Thursday, April 12, from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Police Headquarters.

“This event is an excellent opportunity for our city’s seniors to get information and network with agencies specific to their needs,” said police spokesperson Lt. Tony Sizemore.

Officer Gerald K. Moll is organizing the event.

“Last year, the room was filled to capacity,” he said. “A quick RSVP is recommended.”

Moll said five major topics to be covered are early stages of Alzheimer’s, personal safety, financial safeguards and prescription drug issues. Other topics will be talks including senior choices, elder abuse & neglect, fraud & financial crimes and seniors vs. crime.

“We will also have the professionals available to talk about safe driving and today’s challenges for the elderly.”

It’s not just law enforcement speaking, he said.

“We reach out to the professionals in their field such as Bank of America, a pharmacist from Lee Memorial and experts in the field who deal with our elderly population.”

He’s been a police officer for more than three decades.

“This hits me not only professionally, but personally. My parents are in their 80s, and I’m directly involved in their daily affairs so they don’t become a victim.”

Prizes from the vendors will be raffled off during the seminar.

“We also do a station tour, so they get a hands-on look at their local police department.”

The Cape Coral Police Department Headquarters is at 1100 Cultural Park Blvd.
