A North Fort Myers man has been charged with homicide after police say his weeks-old daughter suffered massive head injuries and died.

Steven Cantrell, 21, is being held in the Lee County Jail without bond on a charge of murder while engaged in a felony offense.

Lee County Sheriff’s Office deputies were called to 18601 Palm Creek Drive at approximately 4:05 p.m. in reference to an unconscious infant.

Upon arrival, deputies were told the child had been taken to a local hospital.

Due to the nature of the injuries, detectives from the Major Crimes Unit were notified and responded to the hospital. There, detectives were shown medical evidence and informed by the emergency room physician that the baby, Jada Cantrell, born Jan. 29, had suffered severe head trauma, including multiple skull fractures, officials said.

The infant died as a result of her massive traumatic head injuries.

Jada lived at home with her mother, father and maternal grandfather.

Investigation revealed that the baby was at home alone with her father, Cantrell, at the time her injuries were sustained.

Cantrell reportedly gave detectives conflicting explanations regarding the infant’s injuries. The investigation showed that none of the explanations Cantrell gave were plausible, officials said.

Based on the investigation, including the documentation of the scene, the recovered evidence, the witness statements and the victim’s documented fatal injuries, detectives arrested and charged Cantrell with one count of first degree felony murder, officials said.
