St. Katharine Drexel Catholic Church releases two CDs

By Staff

St. Katharine Drexel Catholic Church now has two CDs featuring the church choir and church musicians, with a third upcoming for World Youth Day to be held in 2013 in Brazil.

One CD came out last December, featuring the church choir and musicians at Masses and another CD came out this month, recorded live as part of St. Katharine Drexel Catholic Church’s Feast Day Celebration.

The titles of the two works are St. Katharine Drexel Chorus and Musicians and St. Katharine Drexel Church Feast Day Concert 2011. The second was initially recorded last year at the celebration, and took a whole year of work to master and release, said church member Frank Gubala.

He’s a retired music educator of 34 years in Millis Mass, who moved to Florida in 1995 with his entire family, his son and three daughters and their spouses.

“The whole family belongs to the church and we occupy almost an entire pew every Sunday.”

Three generations of the Gubala family brought these CDs to life.

“We started a small recording studio operation but we also do remotes,” he said.

“My son, Frank Gubala II, is our technical mastering expert. My grandson, Frank Gubala III, is recording engineer and my role is two-fold. I produce all the artwork, the cover, the design and do all the marketing.”

Don Sansone is the choir director and he selected all the music for the CDs.

“Our pastor is Father John Deary and he is extremely proud that we (choir and musicians) incorporate such spiritual music with the liturgy. The Council of Bishops of the United States have said music adds to elevation of words in a Mass and music plays a very personal role if done with musicality.”

The CDs are available in the church’s gift shop after each weekend Mass.

“We will also be making them available online. And on Sunday, March 30, weekend there will be a flyer for ordering by mail in the church bulletin.”

The new CD will be as equally special as the current two.

“In the future, in 2013, the Vatican will be sponsoring World Youth Day in Brazil. Many of our members of the Youth Choir and our musicians are producing a world Youth Day CD, which will be a fund-raiser. Patty Wilson conducts the Youth Choir and Donna Augustine and Jack Hill are funding the production costs out of their pockets.”

The Youth Group will be going to Brazil and will present other youth members throughout the world with some of their recorded music, Gubala said.

He’s already working on the cover of that project.

St. Katharine Drexel Catholic Church is located at 1922 S.W. 20th Ave.
