The world famous Anheuser-Busch Budweiser Clydesdales are coming to Cape Coral tomorrow, Thursday, March 1, to appear at Coral Shores Plaza from 3 to 6 p.m.
This hitch team calls Merrimack, N.H., home, but it travels the south when its cold up north. They are arriving straight from a Daytona 500 appearance, said Molly Wright, vice president of marketing for Fort Myers-based Suncoast Beverage Sales, an Anheuser-Busch distributor.
“We bring them in as often as possible, which is about every three years with their schedule,” she said. “They are magnificent.”
To qualify to be part of a hitch, the Clydesdale must be a gelding at least 4 years of age, stand 72 inches at the shoulder and weigh about 1,800 to 2,300 pounds.
They also have to have the signature bay coat, a blaze of white on their face, four white legs and a black mane and tail.
They are “gentle giants,” she said. “They travel in 18 wheelers.”
Those features make them an American icon, said organizers, and one of the world’s most recognized corporate symbols.
They make hundreds of appearances each year – to the delight of crowds young and old, and apparently to the delight of themselves.
“They (the Clydesdales) really enjoy the experience. Once they are in their parade gear, you can just see they know it’s their job, what they were trained to do. They are so proud. They are amazing.”
Today they are on Fort Myers Beach, tomorrow the Cape and then they will appear Sunday, March 4, at Jet Blue Park, the Red Sox stadium, for the opening game.
Coral Shores Plaza is located at 3015 Pine Island Road.
