A Cape Coral man remained hospitalized Tuesday after the vehicle that he was operating collided into a guardrail last week and overturned twice.

Thomas Robert Patton, 52, of 2526 N.W. Embers Terrace, was listed in serious condition at Lee Memorial Hospital, according to hospital officials.

Thursday afternoon, Patton was driving east on Hancock Bridge Parkway in a 2006 Kia Optima when he negotiated a right hand curve and the left side of the vehicle traveled onto the unpaved median, a report states.

Patton reportedly overcorrected to the right, traveling across both of the eastbound lanes of the road and onto the road’s south shoulder. The front of the car then collided with the guardrail surrounding a concrete power pole.

The Kia overturned twice before coming to a rest on its wheels.

Patton, who was ejected from the vehicle, was transported to the hospital with incapacitating injuries. He was reportedly not wearing a seat belt.

According to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, an investigation revealed that Patton was at fault for speeding. His estimated speed was about 75 mph.

The posted speed limit on that section of road is 45 mph.
