A Cape Coral man is accused of breaking into a home Monday afternoon in an attempt to recover money that was reportedly stolen from his mother.

Blake Williams, 23, of 4529 S.W. Seventh Place, was arrested and charged with home invasion robbery with a weapon, petit theft and criminal mischief plus property damage $200 and under. He was booked into the Lee County Jail.

As of Tuesday, Williams remained at the county jail on $69,000 bond.

He could not immediately be reached for comment.

At 1:30 p.m. Monday, Cape police responded to a report of a disturbance with weapons in the 4500 block of Pelican Boulevard. Upon arrival, officers found that the side patio door to the rear of the home was propped open.

As officers walked toward it, a man walked out of the patio wearing a long-sleeved black sweater, black pants and gloves, according to officials. He had a baseball bat and a ski mask in one hand and a machine pistol in the other.

The man ducked back into the patio, and officers ordered him to put the gun down and come out. The man, who was later identified as Williams, complied.

Williams was detained, and police made contact with the homeowner.

The homeowner told police that he received a threatening call from Williams earlier in the day. Williams’ mother recently had $1,200 stolen from her by a known person, and Williams believed the homeowner had received $500 of it.

Williams demanded the money, and when the man refused, Williams said he would be coming to his home to take care of business, officials reported.

The homeowner told police that a short time later, he heard a loud bang at his front door. Williams was at the front door, so the homeowner called police, armed himself with a shotgun and barricaded himself behind a couch.

Williams, unable to gain entry through the front door, walked around to the rear of the home and forcibly entered the locked screen patio, according to officials. He then observed an empty gun case on the master bedroom bed.

He returned to his vehicle and armed himself with the bat and pistol. Upon re-entering the home, Williams found a diamond bracelet and pocketed it.

The homeowner, who was still barricaded behind the couch and armed, saw the police arrive outside and called out to Williams that they had. As Williams was allegedly trying to exit the home and escape, he was detained by police.

“This was a great response by our officers,” CCPD spokesman Lt. Tony Sizemore wrote in a statement. “I believe that we were seconds away from a tragic situation in that home, with two armed men ready to battle it out.”

Williams has a court appearance scheduled for Nov. 7.
