Cape Coral police officers apprehended a pair of would-be bank robbers Wednesday morning after they attempted to stick-up a TIB Bank a 2209 Santa Barbara Blvd.

According to a press release from the Cape Coral Police Department, bank employees noticed a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot as they were preparing to open for business.

Two masked males approached the bank as the front doors were being unlocked but a quick thinking employee relocked the doors and immediately phoned police.

As the robbers fled, employees were able to provide police with a description of the vehicle and the direction in which it traveled.

After a search, police caught up to the vehicle, as it traveled the 400 block of Trafalgar Parkway. The robbers ran from the vehicle after a short pursuit but were caught at the corner of Southwest 9th Street and Southwest 6th Place.

One of the robbers was still wearing his facial covering, according to the press release.

Patrick Healey, 36, and Steven Mammon, 30, were taken into custody and processed.

A search of the suspects’ vehicle found bullet-proof vests, gloves and bandanas, which the press release said was used to cover their faces.

The suspects also threw handguns from the car during the pursuit, which were later discovered by police officers.

“This was an excellent display of teamwork between the bank employees and the police officers that responded. This serves as a stark reminder of the dangers police officers face, in a year marred by gun violence towards officers here in Florida. We are grateful for today’s outcome,” Lt. Tony Sizemore, spokesman for the CCPD, said in a prepared statement.
