Trash can fire causes minimal damages in park restroom

By Staff

About $150 in damage was caused to a Cape Coral park restroom Sunday when a fire was reportedly started in a garbage can in the bathroom.

Cape police and fire responded to a report of a structure fire at Guiffrida Park, at 1044 N.E. Fourth St. Responders observed smoke coming from the roof of the concrete restroom upon arriving, according to official reports.

An investigation revealed that the fire was started in a plastic trash can in the men’s bathroom. The fire ignited paper towels and other items inside the garbage bin, completely destroying the trash can and paper towel dispenser.

There was no structural damage to the building, the reports states.

A fire inspector was unable to determine whether the fire was intentionally or accidentally started. The fire’s cause and heat source is undetermined.

As of Tuesday, the investigation was complete and the case closed.
