The first full graduating class of Cape Coral High School will hold its 30th reunion next month, which will include a tour of their old high school.

Cape Coral High School 1981 President Rich Spiro said the graduating class had 458 students.

“Life was very simple and friendships were the most important things to all of us back then,” he said.

Since graduation, the 1981 Seahawks have held a five-year, 10- year, 15-year, 20-year and now 30-year reunions. Spiro said the attendance for the reunions has always been between 100 to 140 people.

He anticipates approximately 100 people to attend the 30th reunion on Sept. 23 and 24.

After a casual mix and mingle cocktail reception Friday night, participating alumni will attend the Cape High Homecoming game. During the day on Saturday the class of 1981 will take a stroll down memory lane as they are guided through Cape Coral High School on a tour.

Cape Coral High School Assistant Principal Tommy Bowens said the class of 1981 will dress up the school with pompoms, jerseys and banners before they take their tour on Sept. 24.

“I think the reunion and walking through the school will be a great thing,” he said about the class reunion. “See the changes that have been made and reminisce as they walk the hallways at 11 a.m.”

Cape Coral High School holds a special meaning in Bowen’s heart as he was a part of the second graduating class from Cape High in 1982. He said he is looking forward to his 30-year reunion next year, along with the tour of the school with his old classmates.

“I look forward to next year,” Bowens said. “Seeing some of the faces and seeing some of the good times here.”

Since Bowens has been the assistant principal at Cape High he has had one other class reunion walk through, which was the class of ’86.

On Saturday evening, Spiro said they will have their reunion gathering at the Resort at MarinaVillage, which will feature entertainment, food stations and a cash bar.

He said it is going to be an evening of just good fun and old friendships rekindle.

“The entire weekend is causal … keeping it simple and easy for all,” Spiro said.

Once he began reflecting on his high school years, Spiro said he did not realize how blessed he was back then. He said the only thing they had to worry about was where they were going to meet up at after the football game.

“There wasn’t a Friday night, or Saturday night for the most part, where you couldn’t find all of us Seahawks surrounding a bon-fire somewhere in the boonies of Cape Coral,” he said. “The class of ’81 was the class of Cape Coral High School and always will be … proud to be a Seahawk.”
