10-year-old boy arrested to for taking knives to school
A 10-year-old Cape Coral boy is back home after being arrested and charged Tuesday with possession of a weapon on school property, a third degree felony.
The boy, whose identity is being withheld due to his age, was taken to the Lee County Juvenile Assessment Center after officials reportedly discovered two knives – a pocketknife and large bowie-style knife – in the child’s backpack.
At about 3 p.m., Cape police responded to a call involving a school bus in the 3000 block of Northwest Juanita Place. According to a report, the boy had shown the knives to another boy on the bus and a witness alerted the driver.
Police reportedly recovered the two knives from the child’s school bag.
The boy cried and stated that he did not know they were in his bag.
The child was taken into custody and transferred to the juvenile center.
The boy’s grandmother reported Thursday that her grandson was back home. She said the knives had belonged to her son and were stored in a bag in her son’s closet. Her grandson got into the closet and removed them.
“I didn’t know that he took that out,” she said.
The boy told her that he was sorry and stupid for taking the knives.
“I think it was a mistake that he did it,” she said. “I think he learned his lesson from this.”
The boy is currently enrolled at Skyline Elementary.
He is scheduled to appear in juvenile court in September.
