A Cape Coral man is accused of stealing thousands of dollars of copper wiring from the former Alternative Learning Center school site.

David Daniel Daugherty, 35, of 1011 N.E. Pine Island Lane, was arrested and charged Tuesday with four counts of dealing in stolen property and fraud impersonation false identification regulated metals property $300 or more.

He was also charged with two counts of trespassing construction site, larceny grand theft $10,000 or more but less than $20,000, and damage property criminal mischief $1,000 or more.

Daugherty was being held Wednesday at the Lee County Jail.

On July 29, the Cape police responded to a report of more than $18,000 in copper wiring being stolen from a construction site in the 1400 block of Northeast 15th Avenue that once housed the Alternative Learning Center.

A representative for the Lee County School Board and Lee County Electric Cooperative told police that the wiring was stolen from inside the site, which is enclosed with a fence. About $18,375 in wiring was stolen.

The thief also forcibly entered an electrical box belonging to Lee County Electric Cooperative and stole wire. The damage and loss was about $3,675, according to a police report. PVC pipes were also damaged in the incident.

Officials reported that detectives discovered that someone had sold metal of the same type taken from the school site to two recycling centers in the Cape within days of the theft. The person had unloaded hundreds of pounds.

Witness statements, transaction receipts and forensic analysis of the transaction paperwork provided police with probable cause to arrest Daugherty. He was located and taken into custody, according to officials.

Daugherty is being held without bond on unrelated charges for a prior arrest. On July 30, he was booked for burglary, damage property criminal mischief, false statement to secondhand dealer, larceny and dealing in stolen property.

He has court appearances scheduled for Aug. 29 and Sept. 12.
