Second fire in a week in St. James City
A brush fire broke out Wednesday afternoon just east of the Lousana Palms Nursery on Stringfellow Road near Turtle Trail in Saint James City. Fire apparatus from all Pine Island Fire Departments as well as from some Cape Coral Fire Departments responded.
The fire, which was located close to the west side of the road, jumped across the pavement which resulted in the road being closed to traffic in both directions at approximately 4:30 p.m. No homes were threatened by the fire.
Fortunately for firefighters, a hydrant was located in front of the Lousana Palms Nursery so water was readily available. Water also was flown in by helicopter and dumped on the fire. The blaze burned about 30 acres and was mostly contained and traffic flowing again by 8 p.m.
This is the second fire in this area in a week. On July 17 a brush fire, believed to be started by lightning or a discarded cigarette, burned 50 acres near the location of Wednesday’s fire and may well have been the cause.
