A Cape Coral man and a teen involved in a head-on collision Tuesday that resulted in the boy’s death were both wearing safety equipment, according to official reports.
Matthew Buldo, 28, of 206 S.W. 37th St., and Ronald Koger, 13, of 1804 S.E. Seventh St., each had on a helmet and eye protection when the vehicles that they were operating collided in Fort Myers, just off the Del Prado Extension.
Both were transported to Lee Memorial Hospital following the crash, where Koger was pronounced dead. Buldo remained in stable condition Thursday.
According to a Lee County Sheriff’s Office report, Koger was riding a 2004 Kawaski dirt bike west on Rapallo Way when he came across Buldo, who was driving a 2003 Yamaha ATV east on Rapallo Way, at about 5 p.m.
A third rider not involved in the crash reported that both Koger and Buldo took evasive action to avoid each other, but were unsuccessful. Koger was ejected from the dirt bike, while the ATV rolled, coming to rest in bushes.
Buldo, who sustained a head injury, was trauma-alerted, along with Koger.
Koger was traveling an estimated 45 mph, while Buldo was traveling an estimated 40 mph when the accident occurred, according to the report.
The LCSO’s Traffic Homicide Unit is investigating the accident.
