Parks & Rec sets event-filled agenda

By Staff

In honor of National Recreation & Parks month, the city of Cape Coral Parks & Recreation Department will hold numerous community events through July.
The first free event, “Discover Parks and Recreation Day,” will be held on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Yacht Club.
Michelle Dean, Cape Coral Parks and Recreation marketing coordinator, said holding the event at the Yacht Club is the best way to reach people who already were planning on going out to the club on Saturday.
Thirteen parks and recreation divisions will be in attendance on Saturday to offer presentations and provide information for the community about their facilities.
Dean said this is the first year they have held all the activities at one location for the National Recreation & Parks month events.
“In the past we have done free open houses at several facilities,” she said. “We thought it would be the year to combine it and make it easier for the public.”
The department has distributed more than 600 copies of the event flyers to children who are attending camps through the parks and recreation department to generate interest.
The event will include free pony rides, a dunk tank, telescopes for sun viewing, live reptiles on display from Rotary Park, an ice cream social and prize giveaways, which include tickets to Sun Splash Family Waterpark, rounds of golf at Coral Oaks Golf Course and an annual membership to the Yacht Club Pool.
Dean said some of the live demonstrations will include Zumba dancing, kayaking and fishing, along with numerous interactive games.
“We are pleased to offer this free event to showcase several of Cape Coral’s parks and recreational programs at one convenient location,” Director of Cape Coral Parks & Recreation Steve Pohlman said in a prepared statement. “This is a terrific opportunity for individuals and families to come together, have some fun, and learn more about the variety of parks and recreation activities that Cape Coral has to offer.”
In addition, the city is offering a one-day waiver for boat trailer parking fees on July 23. The free parking will save boaters $10.
The boat ramps that will offer free trailer parking include the Yacht Club Boat Ramp, Horton Park Boat Ramp, Rosen Park Boat Ramp, BMX Park Boat Ramp and Burnt Store Boat Ramp.
“We encourage our local boating community to take advantage of this offer and enjoy a day on the water,” Pohlman said.
