ALS West to change location, get new principal

Students at Alternative Learning Center West will begin their first day of school at a new location with a new principal in August.
The Alternative Learning Center West, which is made up of 25 portables, has been located at its current location, 1429 N.E. 15th Ave. since the 2007-2008 school year when the Lee County School District and the city of Cape Coral entered into an agreement.
Joe Donzelli, district spokesperson said an agreement was reached between the City of Cape Coral and the District that the school would remain there for four school years after which a further decision had to be made. After the four years, the agreement stated that a permanent facility would be built to house ALC West or it would be moved.
Donzelli said the district exercised the second option and is returning the school to its former location on the campus of High Tech North with 25 portables.
“Things seem to be going great,” Board Member Don Armstrong said about the move ALC West is under going.
Armstrong said it was easier to move the portables behind High Tech North because the district owns the land.
He said he would like to see a permanent ALC close by instead of portable classrooms in the future.
The school board voted in favor of Superintendent Dr. Joseph Burke’s first good cause recommendation Friday morning as acting superintendent to transfer Assistant Principal George Burns from North Fort Myers High School to Alternative Learning Center West to become the new principal.
Burns will replace former principal Derrick Donnell, who was placed on administrative leave in December last year while the district investigated allegations made against him.
In May, an agreement was reached between the Lee County School District and Donnell’s lawyer when he was reassigned to work on the district’s energy conservation issues.
Donzelli said the Communications Department was informed that Donnell’s annual contract was not renewed Friday and that is no longer a district employee.
Donnell, who also serves as a Cape Coral city councilman, could not be reached for comment Friday.
