Mother and child rescued after car plunges into Lehigh canal
A woman and her 2-year-old son were pulled from her car by a good Samaritan after the vehicle’s brakes failed and the can plunged into a canal in Lehigh.
The 34-year-old driver, who was not identified, told deputies she was driving east on 32nd Street West when she came to the stop sign at Ann Avenue North. She said she attempted to stop but her brakes failed and the vehicle continued to travel and eventually plunged into the water.
Guadalupe Gonzales, 2921 Ann Avenue North, told deputies called to the accident at 6:15 a.m. that he was coming out of his house to go to work when he heard someone yelling there was a car in the canal. He ran to the canal and jumped in, pulling the driver and her toddler out of the vehicle. Gonzales brought both of them safely to bank. He said he did not think about what had to be done, he just jumped in the canal, officials said.
The driver and her son were transported to Lehigh Regional Hospital where they were treated and released.
