USA Dance, Southwest Florida Chapter, is offering affordable eight-week ballroom dance classes at Four Freedoms Park beginning June 29.
USA Dance is a non-profit national organization that promotes ballroom dancing. The organization originally formed in 1965 and then reorganized in 1985 as a non-profit organization.
The $5 dance class for adults 18 years old and older, will offer instruction on how to dance the mambo, merengue, samba and west coast swing every Wednesday. The 90-minute instruction period will then be followed by 30 minutes of practice.
This is the first time these dance styles have been offered in Cape Coral.
Dance instructor Ron Fucci said the best part about the classes is they are only $5 apiece with no contract attached. He said individuals can come as much as they want during the 8-week class until Aug. 24.
Barb Wilson will assist Fucci with the ballroom classes.
Fucci said they began offering the affordable classes a year ago in Fort Myers and since they received such a good turnout, they decided to bring it to Cape Coral.
He said the great thing about ballroom dancing is the exercise you get from it because it engages the mind and body.
The 8-week sessions also helps the dancer grasp and retain what they are learning in the class better.
The classes are made possible due to a partnership the USA Dance has with the Cape Coral Parks and Recreation Department.
At the end of the eight weeks, a graduation ceremony will be held for the students. They will perform a little of everything they learned in the classes at graduation.
Fucci said all adults are welcome to attend. He said the classes typically attracts a lot of senior citizens.
“The real excitement is when we see the young retirees,” he said, adding that every once in a while a few college students attend the classes.
USA Dance’s mission is to “promote the quality and quantity of ballroom dancing in the United States,” which is what it is trying to do in Cape Coral.
The class will be held every Wednesday from 7-9 p.m. at Four Freedoms Park, which is located at 4818 Tarpon Court. For information, call Don Davenport at 239-368-8423.
