Cape police make arrests at Cape Coral metal dealer business

By Staff

A task force made up of law enforcement personnel from the Cape Coral Police Department, Lee County Sheriff’s Office and the Fort Myers Police Department made two arrests Thursday afternoon at a Cape Coral business.
Detectives did a surprise inspection of the second-hand metal business, Precious Metal, at 1719 N.E. 10th Terrace in Cape Coral. Detectives poured over transaction records from the business to ensure their compliance with state statute on record keeping. This is done to discourage businesses from conducting “back-door” or “off the books” sales of scrap metal, officials said.
In Thursday’s inspection, investigators found evidence of sales without proper documentation, officials said.
Owner James Rains, 58, of North Fort Myers, was arrested on charges of having a pattern of improper record keeping as it relates to dealing in second-hand scrap metal. Employee Louis Dushek, 33, of North Fort Myers, was arrested on charges of improper documentation of a scrap metal transaction. Both charges are misdemeanors and both Rains and Dushek were released at the scene with a notice to appear in criminal court.
