On Wednesday, Cape Coral police responded to a report of a theft in progress at 10 a.m. at 409 N.E. 23rd Ave. The caller told police that there was a man stealing an air-conditioning unit from a home, officials said.
As officers were arriving, the caller advised that the man had reportedly gotten the unit into a red SUV and was leaving the area. A witness got the tag number. Police ran the tag and discovered that it was registered to a person who lived nearby.
Police responded to the home and found a man standing by a red Ford Explorer in the driveway. The man reportedly matched the description given by the witness. The witness was brought to the scene, and the man and the SUV were reportedly identified as those involved in the earlier theft.
The man, Cody J. Myers, 25, of 2308 N.E. Sixth St., was arrested and charged with burglary, grand theft, criminal mischief and resisting arrest.
According to officials, two air-conditioning units were seen in plain view through the garage door window of the home. Detectives obtained a search warrant and recovered the two air-conditioning units, which Myers stole.
One of the units belongs to a victim who has not yet been identified. It is believed that it came from a vacant home or home of a seasonal resident in the area of the 400 block of Northeast 23rd Avenue, or surrounding area.
Police are looking for the victim, officials said.
