A Cape Coral man who drove into a portable electronic arrow indictor last month and flipped his vehicle has been charged in the incident.
John S. Stansbery, 45, of 122 S.W. 13th Terrace, was issued a notice to appear Wednesday for DUI with property damage and driving without a valid driver’s license after authorities received the lab results of his blood test.
Stansbery reportedly had a blood alcohol content of .250.
On April 22, Cape police responded to an accident near the intersection of Skyline Boulevard and Southwest 21st Street at 10:48 a.m. Stansbery was traveling north on Skyline in the right lane when he reportedly drifted to the right and struck the electronic sign.
The police report indicates he over-corrected, lost control of the SUV and flipped the vehicle.
According to a report, witnesses said Stansbery had been driving in a reckless manner, driving in and out of traffic, prior to hitting the indictor. One witness said Stansbery had been tailgating her and bouncing around.
Stansbery was removed from the flipped SUV, at which point he allegedly stated that he had had consumed three beers. Police reportedly located in the vehicle a case of beer that contained five beers, which were still cold.
Stansbery was taken to Lee Memorial Hospital for possible injuries.
At the hospital, Stansbery denied driving the SUV. He told officers that he did not know what happened, and that he has never had a driver’s license as he does not need one. Stansbery provided a blood sample but would not sign the consent form.
The estimated damage to the SUV is $5,000. He does not own the vehicle.
Stansbery’s court date is scheduled for June 13.
