North Fort Myers High School is known for promoting the arts. Last week, the Spring Chorus Concert, called “A Knight of Inspiration” after the schools’ known Red Knights name, capped off some of the year’s accomplishments.
The concert highlighted classic and popular favorites.
The chorus and musical director for the school is Gwen Gregg, who talked about her talented vocalist students in a recent interview.
“This has been a busy year for the North Fort Myers High School choruses,” she said. “There are 126 students in three choirs at North High. The Winter Concert was held in December with a record number of people in attendance. They presented a variety of music; folk songs, classical, baroque and holiday songs. Students have auditioned and participated in All-State Women’s Choir in Tampa, Lee All-County Honor Choir and the musical ‘Hairspray.'”
The honors and distinctions just kept coming, she said.
“We have also had students participate in a district-wide solo and ensemble event and music performance assessment. Individual students received excellents and superiors in solo competition. The Cavalieri Rossi (Red Knight) Choir received an excellent at the district choral level and the Les Belles Filles (the beautiful girls) Choir received a superior at the district level.”
The Cavalieri Rossi Choir has performed the national anthem at football games and various school events. It also performed a musical review at Old Bridge Village in North Fort Myers.
“The final concert ‘A Knight of Inspiration’ was filled with inspirational music from the ’60s to present time. The concert was followed by an awards ceremony where every student received a chorus pin and a certificate of participation. Students who had accomplished honors in participating in the activities mentioned above were presented with certificates, pins, trophies, medals and plaques.”
Gregg also noted that for the first time at North High, there was a student that was introduced to “Choral Hall of Fame.”
“A student must be in chorus for four years, participate in the music performance assessment for four years, participate in All-County and solo/ensemble for three years and audition and participate in All-State for three years. We hope that each year we will have at least one student make it into the Choral Hall of Fame.”
