Man dies in auto crash in Cape Coral

By Staff

A driver was pronounced dead on the scene of a single vehicle crash this morning in the 400 block of Coronado Parkway.
The man was identified as William Burke, 44. No address was provided.
The crash occurred at about 2:10 a.m. Residents pulled the unresponsive driver from the vehicle since the engine was on fire. Officers then conducted CPR until EMS arrived. The man, however, had died and was so pronounced on scene by Lee County EMS, officials said.
According to police, Burke was traveling eastbound on Coronado Parkway in the 4100 block in the left lane. The front left tire of the 2003 Hyundai made contact with the corner of the cement median. The roadway curves to the right. The SUV continued eastbound in the center of the median break until the left side tires made contact with the next cement median. The vehicle then exited the second median and continued eastbound, its front tires hitting the next cement median before striking a tree head on.
The neighbor at 4038 Coronado Parkway heard the traffic crash and removed the driver due to the smoke coming from the vehicle.
The driver was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the traffic crash.
Officer P. O’Grady and Sgt. D.Cox responded to conduct the traffic homicide investigation. Forensics responded and Community Outreach coordinators responded to make contact with family members.
The investigation is ongoing.
No further information is available for release at this time, officials said Tuesday morning.
