Cape Coral Police detectives have arrested a suspect in a series of burglaries, more than 20 residential burglaries throughout the southwest Cape, officials said Friday.
For the past several weeks, residents living south of Cape Coral Parkway and west of Skyline Boulevard have been on alert for what police are calling a brazen daytime burglar and thief.
According to a report from the CCPD, detectives with the Property Crimes Unit developed Trevor Turner, 29, of 1215 S.W. 53rd St., as a suspect in the crimes.
Detectives set up surveillance on Turner and began tracking his movements several days ago, officials said, adding Turner was also suspected of dealing in narcotics, so police used this as part of their investigation into the thefts.
Detectives reportedly purchased narcotics from Turner and inquired about electronics and jewelry. The report states that Turner then sold stolen merchandise, beleived to be proceeds from the reported home burglaries, to detectives.
Police were then able to arrest Turner and obtain a search warrant.
According to the report, detectives discovered two bags in Turner’s attic containing hundreds of pieces of jewelry, more than 50 watches, two laptop computers, numerous personal effects and several coin collections. Also located during the search was ammunition for an AK47 Assault Rifle.
Turner is a convicted felon and is prohibited from possessing guns and/or ammunition, police said.
Turner was arrested in the early morning hours today and charged with four counts of sale of an opium derivative (prescription pills), five counts of possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of ammunition by a convicted felon.
Turner is being interviewed by burglary detectives and has confessed to some of the burglaries, officials said, adding more charges could be coming as detectives gather more evidence and close out more cases.
Capt. Mike Urraro, who commands the detective bureau, said, “We often talk about determination and dedication, but the investigation that the Property Unit and Vin Unit (with the assistance of SCU and patrol) executed this week clearly demonstrates what relentless police work is truly about. Stay safe, catch the bad guy, protect the citizens of Cape Coral, and have a working relationship with the community. All of these important factors were accomplished this week.”
Urraro went on to say, “This was a very productive day and all of you should be very proud of your efforts and the outcome. I know I am.”
“I echo Capt. Urraro’s sentiment,” Police Chief Jay Murphy said in the report. “I am appreciative of the hard work of the men and women of this police department. Given time and resources, we can be very very effective.”
