Kayaker pulls woman from Cape canal

By Staff

A Cape Coral woman apparently drowned Monday afternoon in a canal.
Patricia Ann Stiner, 76, of 111 S.W. 57th St., was found floating in a canal behind a home in the 100 block of Southwest 56th Terrace by a kayaker. She was pulled from the water and pronounced dead after emergency responders were unable to resuscitate her, according to a police report.
Stiner’s family said she had suffered from dementia and Alzheimer’s for about five years and that she had frequently gotten out of the house and wandered around the neighborhood. Stiner was a participant in the Project Lifesaver program.
According to the report, a woman was kayaking in the Bimini canal at about 3:48 p.m. when she located a woman, later identified as Stiner, floating face down in the water. The kayaker jumped in the water, turned the woman over and started to swim toward the nearest dock.
As the kayaker was swimming toward the dock, she flagged down some boaters for assistance. The boaters pulled Stiner from the water and then pulled up to a dock. One boater began CPR on Stiner while 911 was called.
Emergency responders arrived and attempted to resuscitate Stiner. All attempts were unsuccessful and she was pronounced dead.
