A former Cape Coral Fleet Services employee is now working in a volunteer capacity with the city manager’s office by providing fuel delivery training and consultation.
City spokeswoman Connie Barron confirmed Mark Firulli is delivering fuel throughout the city, a job he previously performed as part of his duties in Fleet Services, she said.
“He offered to assist the city with the fuel delivery route during this transition while we continue to evaluate Fleet Services,” Barron said.
Firulli could not be reached for comment.
Barron said Firulli has all the necessary certifications required by the Department of Transportation to deliver the fuel and that he is not pumping any fuel, only driving the truck.
Barron said Firulli worked for the city since 2000, and retired “a few months ago”.
It could not be immediately determined whether Firulli is volunteering on a full- or part-time basis, nor could the frequency of fuel deliveries be immediately determined. Information as to the cost savings, if any, associated with using Firulli as a volunteer also was not available.
Having Firulli deliver fuel keeps other employees with similar certifications from leaving their regularly assigned duties to drive the trucks, Barron said.
She also said he will help other employees, when they do start making fuel deliveries, to better understand the delivery routes.
“Being familiar with those routes he can help other employees become familiar with those routes,” Barron said.
Firulli’s application was approved and signed by City Manager Gary King on April 25. Barron did not know how long Firulli would be used in this capacity.
