Man dies in Collier County traffic accident
A Cape Coral man was involved in a traffic accident Thursday that killed one person and left another hospitalized.
Allan Butler, 46, was stopped in the southbound lane of state Route 29 in Collier County in a dump truck when a 1994 GMC reportedly crashed into the rear of his vehicle. The accident occurred about 2 miles south of county road 858 at 9:15 a.m.
Butler was not injured in the crash, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The driver of the GMC, Viola Ficklin Wilson, 52, of Lithonia, Ga., was airlifted to Lee Memorial Hospital in serious condition. A male passenger in her vehicle sustained fatal injuries in the crash and was pronounced dead on the scene.
The FHP had not released the man’s name or age as of Friday afternoon.
Hospital officials reported that Wilson remained in serious condition.
According to the report, traffic in the crash area is allocated into one lane due to a construction zone. Prior to the crash, construction personnel were alternating northbound and southbound vehicles. Southbound was at a stop.
The GMC reportedly failed to stop upon approaching the halted dump truck.
